“Not so sure” an Organized Bike Tour is Right for Me: Dispelling the Myths

on March 17, 2018

For every person who’s enthusiastic about an organized bike tour, there is another that is not so sure. “Not so sure” is not always just one thing—in fact, rarely do we hear that a bike tour just plain sounds like a bad idea. The “not so sure” is often concern around the physical requirements, if they’ll actually see what they want to see, and about whether the overall tone of will be a good fit for them.

Here’s the thing: we don’t have a one-size-fits-all approach. We aren’t about a top-down model where we tell you what’s exciting about a city, or what you should want to see. We don’t prioritize dry, encyclopedic information. And, as much as we like to keep fit, we’re not running a fitness-focussed cycling operation. Instead, we pride ourselves on offering what so many people look for in a travel experience-on or off a bicycle, with or without a tour involved—friendliness, comfort, and a good time. We’re really proud that we prioritize these experiences, and even more proud that our reviews from past participants agree.

Still “not so sure” if an organized bike tour is right for you? Let us dispel some common myths:

1. You have to be an avid cyclist to do a bike tour.

You have to be comfortable riding a bicycle in an urban environment—that’s it. We don’t expect you bike uphill to work all winter long, or that you’re a road racer. You don’t need special gear or a training regimen. If you are comfortable biking downtown, our tours should suit you just fine. Montreal is a bike-friendly city, making it ideal for bike tours. We have a fleet of safe and stylish bikes and we take the time to pair you with one that’s most stable and comfortable riding. If the duration of a tour sounds daunting, keep in mind the frequent breaks, the sight-seeing, and—hello—the snacking.

2. You don’t get to experience the city as a local would.

We like to say we make travellers feel like locals and locals feel like travellers, and we truly believe that we do. If you’re looking to immerse yourself in the city’s culture like a true Montrealer—getting to know the neighbourhoods off the beaten path, and their histories, as well as where to find the best café au lait or gelato; if you’re looking for fresh fruit markets and parks along with (or without) the typical tourist spots, we’ve got you covered.

3. Organized tours are only for groups.

Internationally, there are many companies that run tours catered to group travel. At Fitz & Follwell, we’re happy to plan a tour for your office, conference, or even bachelorette party. That said, our daily tours are open to anyone, regardless of the number of people in your party. Every week we take out groups consisting of couples, families, friends, and solo travelers.

4. Organized tours require booking far in advance.

We won’t lie: we love advance bookings. If you know you’re coming through town, we’d love a heads up to organize your tour. That said, we run tours all the time and often have spots left to join. Had a day’s meetings cancelled or plans change—give us a call and we’ll do our best to fit you into a scheduled tour. We’re a small business, so you’re dealing with real people when you get in touch—we’d be happy to give you the details of any tours we have booked for the times you’re in town.

5. Organized tours are inflexible.

Hey, we’re sure some are, but that’s not our style! We offer custom tours for corporate groups, conferences and conventions, international visitors, as well as locals looking for unique celebration experience. Want to gather a group without all the hosting duties? Book a tour that centres around breweries, bakeries, or seasonal events. Have people get together for a birthday by going out on a bike tour and ending with a picnic. Just let us know what you have in mind and we’ll work with you to plan something unforgettable.
